REVIEWS

In a wonderful voice vaguely reminiscent of old Humphrey Bogart movies, this short is a true gem. A mystery to solve, a love to grow and old wounds to put to rest make up a delightful read.

Set during the late 1940’s, The Pickle My Little Friend, published by Wild Rose Press, authentically depicts the era’s unique dialog and investigative tactics, giving it a “Sam Spade” feel. The plot is smooth though moves rapidly. Mr. Trevane and Ms. Casey develop convincing characters who are also intense and vibrant. I’ll be passing this short story’s name on to my mystery-reading friends, while waiting for this dynamic team to pen another great mystery.

THE PICKLE MY LITTLE FRIEND from Evan Trevane and Shawn M. Casey is a great little mystery where nothing is as it seems. I was amazed by how they could keep me guessing even with such a short tale.

Not only is The Pickle My Little Friend a clever title, but the story itself is really well spun. I enjoyed the dialogue, the theme, everything surrounding the chain of events. Evan Travane and Shawn Casey tell a story that is visual the minute the character of Jack enters the picture and begins his search. With a colorful cast, this read is a dynamic page-turner; one that I was engrossed in from the start.

The Pickle My Little Friend is a fun story. A sweet little murder mystery, it has some unusual twists and turns. The plot kept me interested and the old-fashioned references were entertaining. Jack’s thoughts are clearly brought to light and that lets the reader get right inside his head. I felt as if I accompanied him on his stakeout at Vicky’s apartment. I could almost see the lighted window as he watched her, nearly hear her voice as she tried to explain her circumstances to him. This is a well written story, one that is very amusing. I believe I won’t be able to look at a pickle again without smiling!

This is an enjoyable puzzle, with a touch of superstition and a hidden-almost-in-plain-sight solution. Vicky is an intriguing Gal Friday and watching Jack come to his senses is a great deal of fun.
